Report from the NMFS Workshop on Building Environmentally Explicit Stock Assessments


Current Status of Accomplishment or Milestone: Report completed and submitted for internal review and approval by the SWFSC.

Background:
The PFEL hosted the NMFS Workshop on Building Environmentally Explicit Stock Assessments during October 2003.  Representatives from all NMFS Science Centers and the Office of Science and Technology participated in the workshop.  The workshop considered environmental effects on the production and assessment of highly migratory species, coastal pelagics, groundfishes, salmon, protected species, and invertebrates.  The nature of environmental variability in the Atlantic and Pacific and access to environmental data were also discussed.

Purpose of Activity/Goal of Project:
The report is intended to provide a record of the presentations and discussions of the Workshop.

Description of Accomplishment and Significant Results:
A final draft of the report from the Workshop has been completed and submitted for internal review and approval by the SWFSC.

Significance of Accomplishment (e.g., to the Center, to Management, and to NMFS Strategic plan Goals): The report is significant because it provides a record of the presentations and discussions of the Workshop.  The report describes the variety of problems being tackled by NMFS scientists as well as the diversity of opinions regarding appropriate ways to address these problems.
